Backpacking in the Southern
Appalachians
Alpha Treks Outdoor Discovery offers
guided trips into the wilderness of
America. We hike in small groups of
eight or less. We plan for plenty of
time so you can enjoy yourself with
nature. We do all the planning,
provide the equipment and food.
Starting in April 2008, Alpha Treks
will be conducting guided discovery
backpacking trips in The Great Smoky
Mountain National Park and the
surrounding National Forest.
The Great Smoky Mountains Get away from the hustle and
bustle of big city crowds, and walk
into the natural world of The Great
Smoky Mountains. The backcountry is
best encountered on foot, where you
only hear the sounds of nature.
Though most visitors never venture
far from their automobiles, our
Smokies’ trips are in true
wilderness.
Let us show you the special places
we have discovered that you can only
get to by hiking. You will see
beautiful waterfalls, ancient
forests, and fields full of unique
wild flowers. World renowned for its
diversity of plant and animal life,
today the Great Smoky Mountains are
the home of over 1,500 species of
flowering plants, including
approximately 130 types of trees, a
greater number than is found in
Northern Europe. There are
approximately sixty different
species of mammals, fifty varieties
of fish, and eighty reptiles and
amphibians.
More than two hundred birds have
been observed within the park
boundaries, sixty are permanent
residents.
